@albert_kai would love to include your collage in the new homepage @Julita

there are thousands of photos in google drive. some of the better ones i’ve pulled out into the Happy People folder - although i haven’t updated this for around a year so some more recent ones should be used to. Julita if you find any good ones send me them (whether you use them or not, and i’ll add them to this file for the future)

Albert can you give Julita a guidance on the dimensions, files sizes and formats you want to work with please

@adam great effort on the poster. here’s some feedback;

  • the font makes it difficult to read from a distance. i generally look to see what people who really love fonts and make posters are using like these guys, as typography is unlikely to become my next passion in life
  • the home url is better for sharing: http://brightertomorrowmap.com/
  • include the #brightertomorrowmap hashtag (which i haven’t actually put on the website yet. i’ll do that right now)
  • can you add our logo onto it. you can find it by clicking resources above and there should be a folder called logo’s
  • “THE BRIGHTER TOMORROW MAP CAN “CONNECT” YOU TO
THE ANSWERS, AND HELP YOU TO BUILD A BRIGHTER FUTURE” would be a more relevant word as our map’s core aim is connection. i added the second part as the poster needed something hopeful and happy
  • i’ll add the text in the next comment so i can cross post to the copywriting thread

#4

oh, i guess i won’t cross post. that doesn’t seem to work very well. i’ll just tag @NCaley here as he’s the only copywriter active atm

i think yes with the direction. i think the poster might risk reminding them of the stress of their situation. i’ll see if i can keep the message but use more hopeful language

DO YOU KNOW…

WHERE
YOU’LL
SLEEP
TONIGHT?

DO YOU NEED
HELP FINDING

SOMEWHERE
SAFE TO SLEEP?

WHAT
THE
NEXT MEAL
IS?

A GOOD MEAL?

WHO
YOU CAN
GO TO
FOR
HELP?
(a bit broad and dis-empowering)

A WARM SHOWER?

A WASHING MACHINE?

A FRIENDLY CHAT?

I realise this would be breaking your who, what, where and ‘the answers’ paragraph, which were very nice. perhaps @nick can have a look

no problem, I’ll keep an eye on things and make changes as appropriate.

When the style/direction of this one is nailed down I’ll start working on the coffee shop one too

Here’s the poster with your amendments so far…

#7

oh, buddy. that font is even harder to read quickly

aside from that it looks great, i’m looking forwards to getting it out. i’d suggest having a space under the title and the three paragraphs below. again for increased readability

here’s a good resource i found: http://abacus.bates.edu/~bpfohl/posters/#fonts

the title is actually readable due to its size, so you can leave that unless you think it doesn’t look good when the rest of the text changes

looking at it now, i’m thinking that we need to explain Focallocal as the map is all about the Brighter Tomorrow Map then suddenly we have an unrelated graphic. can you please add;

‘created by volunteers at the Focallocal Positive Action Community’

in small text connected to the logo. then i think the poster is there

#8

i just had a thought, it should include free and community so

AND SHOWS FREE LOCAL RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO YOU -
» PLACES TO STAY DURING THE DAY/NIGHT
» FOOD AND DRINK
» WASHING/HEALTH FACILITIES
» SUPPORT GROUPS
» EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
» OFFERS OF KINDNESS FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

#9

something more like this? Shelter Poster v3.pdf (417.0 KB)

Had you had any thoughts about copy for the coffee shop poster for the public?

#10

looks great. can i request a tiny gap under the logo and before the text, then its awesome.

i prepared some thoughts on that poster, let me find them and post here

excellent, well done  :tada:

For the Cafe the main message would be that they can help transform the lives of people who are homeless, and it just takes 1 minute. we can make this sound like a challenge.

  1. look for free resources and enter every free resource they find throughout their day into the map to make a real difference to those going through difficult times. (we’ll let users find out about offering things they can do to help once they are there. i think a simple task is easier to market)

empowering - we all feel that horrible feeling when walking past someone sleeping on the streets and wanting to do something but not being sure what. charities now say don’t give money. this map empowers the user to make a difference to their lives (in 3 main ways)

theme: happy, bright and hopeful. a ‘brighter’ tomorrow. add the map website, our logo, and user our communities shade of orange in the design

  1. (primary) every time you see a free resource add it to the map

  2. offer kind things you can do to support those in need in your local community

  3. print the map and give it out to people you meet who are homeless (we’ll push this more later. the functionality is only 40% complete right now)

#14

@adam i think this poster needs to have some emotive images. one hopeful and happy with a touch of human connection, one reminder of the reality of sleeping on the streets

Coffee Shop Poster v1.pdf (708.3 KB)

here’s the first crack at it

#16

i like where you’re coming from here!

i’d say that the text needs to be 2X - 3X bigger everywhere. the most common size this’ll be printed it A4, or as a flyer.

the text is a little hard to read where the two pictures meet in the middle. can you add a little space to each side by moving the text a fraction towards the outside

text edit:

the brighter tomorrow map can lead someone
from sleeping on the streets to a brighter future

perfect  maybe save the name till later so

  • a new tool that can lead someone
from sleeping on the streets to a brighter future

we just need people to signpost the way

  • a more effective way you can help

if you see something today that may help
a rough sleeper - or can provide something
yourself - please let people know about it at

  • every time you see a free resource that is useful to a rough sleeper, or if you’d like to offer something, please give 30secs and post it onto the:

lets add a few examples to help them understand the map:

  • examples include; showers, support groups, cv/resume help, pass it on coffee, a nice chat over a cup of tea, washing machines, food, etc

  • the map is printable. hand them out nearby

#17

also, these two should have white backgrounds for readability:

#brightertomorrowmap

the brighter tomorrow map is a project created by volunteers at
the Focallocal Positive Action Community

#18

oh, and i liked your qr code on the last map. can you put it here too?

#19

Coffee Shop Poster v2.pdf (712.9 KB)
I had to take some liberties with the text, see what you think

#20

@Adam 1st impression. it looks very busy. that font is difficult to read as the gaps between letters are small

  1. if its set on bold perhaps that can be solved by simply switching bold off. the text on the right side is a little too large for the amount of writing in it. perhaps the text size on the left half is ok and on the right it could be smaller

  2. on the left side i think 3 lines of text is too much to catch someone’s attention

a new tool that can lead someone
from sleeping on the streets to a brighter future

and

a more effective way you can help

are more direct and eye catching statements

3:
to a rough sleeper, for example, the

should be broken into two paragraphs. we can remove ‘the location of’ to save space

to a rough sleeper, for example;

  • showers
  • washing machines
